MANILA, Philippines – The National University Lady Bulldogs put on a magnificent display of their frontcourt prowess as they swept the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses, 25-18, 25-13, 25-21, to rise to 4-1 in the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, January 4, at The Arena in San Juan City.

Buoyed by yet another scintillating performance from Dindin Santiago, the Lady Bulldogs cruised to an easy win against a gutsy but shorter UST side to share the second spot in the standings with Ateneo de Manila University anew.

The Tigresses – who are looking to bounce back from their loss to Adamson University in their last outing – came out to test NU early as they took their foes to a fierce exchange from the get-go. The Sampaloc-based crew got their bearings midway in the first to erect a 7 point margin however, and eventually take the set, 25-18.

It was the same story in the second set as UST looked good in the early goings only to slide down towards the end to hand the Lady Bulldogs a 2-set edge, 25-13.

Things got closer in the third frame as the Tigresses’ catch-up efforts almost paid off, pulling to within 2, 21-23 late in the game but Santiago and Mina Aganon showed just enough composure to seal the deal for NU, 25-21.

NU committed numerous errors – 19 in all – but it was overshadowed by their good showing in the attacks department (48 compared to UST’s 27) aces (6-2) and blocks (7-3) en route to their second straight win.

Santiago starred for NU with 19 points on 16 attacks as Aganon tallied in 14 markers. Pam Lastimosa became the lone bright spot for UST Saturday night, finishing with 12 points on 11 attacks. – Rappler.com
