BORACAY, Philippines - Familiar powerhouse squads and shock troopers made their mark alike as the 17th Nestea Beach Volleyball Battle of Champions kicked off at the beautiful beaches of Boracay on Labor Day Wednesday, May 1.
Twenty-four squads started their respective roads toward the much-coveted beach volleyball trophy, and also the chance to represent the country in the sport.
All soaked under the scorching heat of the sun and after 15 matches on opening day, 5 teams got early leads with 2-0 records.
Here is the roundup of the 2014 Nestea Beach Volleyball Battle of Champions Day 1.
Adamson clips La Salle in thriller
In the highly-anticipated main event of the afternoon, Adamson University's duo of Bang Pineda and Mands Villanueva showed solid composure, battling back from a one set deficit to bag their second win via a 23-25, 21-16, 16-14 come from behind win against De La Salle's Ara Galang and Kim Fajardo in the women's division.
Villanueva rifled La Salle with the telling blows including the last two points that broke a 14-all deadlock and sealed the game for Adamson in a game almost paused until tomorrow as darkness reached the shores of Boracay.
"In games where both teams are strong, I think the only way to win is to get the lucky breaks. It just favored us today," said AdU head coach Sherwin Meneses, who swept Mindanao State University easily, 21-6, 21-9.
Southwestern University bets remain unscathed
Both the men's and women's teams of Southwestern University combined for a perfect opening day, picking up two wins each.
The men's squad edged the College of St. Benilde, 21-17, 21-18, before waking up from a slumber, going the distance, and shutting University of San Jose Recoletos, 18-21, 21-17, 16-14.
The women's pair of Therese Ramos and Floremel Rodriguez meanwhile, both newcomers, starred on Wednesday with convincing wins, which included slaying defending three-time women's champions Central Phil. University, 21-19, 21-12 for their highlight of the day. They dealt Our Lady of Perpetual Help-Laguna a 21-10, 21-13 mastery in the morning.
Mindanao State U of Tawi-tawi boys in rousing start
Mindanao State University (Tawi-tawi)'s aspiring duo of Nur Amin Madsairi and Aga Tawaluddin did not fail to shine as well, bagging two wins to jumpstart their campaign.
They first made easy work of St. Louis University in the men's division, 21-11, 21-9, while also foiling Foundation University, 21-8, 21-15.
Coach Edward Lee wants his boys to improve on their Top 5 finish last year, and also be wary of the elusive chance to don the national colors.
"I hope they play with a mindset that they have a rare chance to make it to the national team," he said.
University of St. La Salle denies UST
The University of Santo Tomas tandem of Pam Lastimosa and Carmela Tunay took a different route as they faltered in their debut, falling to Bacolod's University of St. La Salle.
The Visayan spikers Patty Jane Orendain and Katya Grabato took advantage of UST's poor defense which translated into easy points before completing a 21-16, 21-18 victory.
