Foton sweeps Cignal in straight sets to open Superliga

MANILA, Philippines – The 2015 Philippine Superliga season opened with the Foton Tornadoes making quick work of the Cignal HD Spikers, 25-18, 26-24, 25-23, on Saturday, March 21, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Patty Orendain finished with 18 points to lead the winning side, while UP Lady Maroon standout Nicole Tiamzon impressed in her debut with 14 markers. UST’s Pam Lastimosa helped out as well, recording 8 points.

Foton, who last-placed in the last Superliga conference, rallied from a six-point deficit, 16-10, in the third set to come away with the sweep.

The Tornadoes utilized timely scores by Tiamzon’s services to uncork a 6-0 run that tied the matchup but trailed once again at 23-21 as Cignal took advantage of their opponents’ paltry middle-floor defense.

Unfortunately for the HD Spikers, a number of errors allowed their opponents to tie the contest and snag the period.

Jannine Navarro finished with 10 points for Foton, who had more spike points, 38-31, and scored on 26 Cignal errors.

The Tornadoes also did a better job with digs, 21-17.
