CAGAYAN VALLEY, Philippines - The Cagayan Valley is set to host this year’s State Colleges, Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) National Olympics on February 8-14.
The said event is an athletic competition of all state-run colleges and universities in the country, bringing all 17 regions to compete for 41 sports and socio-cultural games. SCUAA is a counterpart of University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
Cagayan State University earlier won the bidding for the athletic meet, which resumes this year after its cancellation last year due to disasters that struck the Visayas region in 2013.
The host province and university have worked jointly to rehabilitate the venue and sports facilities.
Last year, the provincial government allotted P150 million (approximately $3.4 million USD) for the rehabilitation of the biggest sports complex in Cagayan, where some major events of the SCUAA will happen.
Said amount was part of the P200 million ($4.5 million USD) loan of the government of Cagayan to Landbank of the Philippines.
Issues of backing-out arose to the hosting of the province after the provincial and city government faced delays in the passing of their 2015 budgets early January.
Vice Mayor Benjamin De Guzman Jr of Tuguegarao explained the delay of the budget saying the executive, headed by Mayor jojo Caronan, only submitted the program of work last January 14.
“Right now nasa committee level na at by next week nasa plenary na for discussion,” De Guzman said in message.
The event, however, seemed to be unstoppable anymore as some delegates of the SOCCSKCARGEN region arrived in the city yesterday. - Rappler.com
