Carlos Yulo rediscovers his deadly form, winning gold in floor exercise and bronze in vault in the All-Japan Senior & Masters Gymnastics Championship

It did not take long for Carlos Yulo to bounce back from his shaky Tokyo Olympics campaign as he bagged two medals in the 2021 All-Japan Senior & Masters Gymnastics Championship on Thursday, September 23.

Yulo captured gold in floor exercise, the event where he won a historic world championship two years ago, and bronze in vault.

After a disappointing 44th-place finish in floor exercise in the Olympics, the pint-sized gymnast rediscovered his deadly form in the All-Japan tourney as he scored 15.300 to claim the top prize.

The 21-year-old bested Uchida Hayato (14.700) and Takahiro Goshima (14.466) for the gold medal.

He then tallied 15.000 points for third place in vault, landing behind Asato Keisuke (15.233) and Tanigawa Wataru (15.200).

Yulo has been hard at work in Japan as he vowed to come back stronger following his first Olympic stint in Tokyo, where he fell short of a medal as he settled for fourth place in vault and failed to reach the finals of his pet floor exercise event.

Up next for Yulo is the 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan in October as he tries to defend his floor exercise world title against the likes of Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat and China’s Xiao Ruoteng.

Yulo beat Dolgopyat and Xiao – the gold and bronze medalists in the Tokyo Olympics, respectively – in the 2019 edition of the worlds. – Rappler.com
