UAAP Power Rankings: Tamaraws charge to #1

MANILA, Philippines — These rankings are based on each team’s Cumulative Efficiency Ratings (CER – sum of all its players’ efficiency ratings as calculated by PBA-Online.net) AND its wins. The formula I used was this:

Team EFF = CER + (# of wins x 70)

I gave each win a value of 70 stat points simply because the average score for each of the college teams in the 2013 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup (based on Statsboard) was 72.45ppg. I just rounded that down to an even 70.

Despite the limitations of the statistical basis, I believe that these rankings still generally reflect a balance of “how good each team has been” and “how good each team is projected to be.”

Let’s go. Time for the disagreeing to begin.

1. FEU Tamaraws
(3 wins, 0 losses, 490.0 Team EFF)

Let’s see. FEU has gone on to beat two potential Final Four contenders (UE & Ateneo) and blasted UP as expected. Romeo and Garcia seem to have found a way to harmonize their talents, too. Watch out.

2. NU Bulldogs
(2 wins, 1 loss, 382.4 Team EFF)

Alfred Aroga may not be able to play any longer, but the Bulldogs won’t miss him if Emmanuel Mbe continues to put up 16 points and 12 boards per. The only blemish so far is that painful loss to UE last Saturday.

3. Adamson Soaring Falcons
(2 wins, 1 loss, 367.4 Team EFF)

Well look at those Falcons soaring without Alex Nuyles and Eric Camson! Winning over UP was expected, and perhaps also the loss to UST, but leading by a mile against UE? Wow. It’s a good thing they were able to stave off the Red Warriors’ final rally, too.

4. De La Salle Green Archers
(2 wins, 1 loss, 353.6 Team EFF)

Two impressive wins after losing in OT to the Tigers. A different bounce here or a call made could have just as easily resulted in DLSU going 3-0. Also, that Perkins fellow? Man can he play.

5. UST Growling Tigers
(2 wins, 1 loss, 327.6 Team EFF)

Two close wins and a close loss have certainly helped shape UST’s character, but losing Teng to an injury might just shape the Tigers’ future… in a not so good way.

6. UE Red Warriors
(1 win, 2 losses, 277.8 Team EFF)

The Warriors certainly haven’t really played like the Final Four team I projected them to be, but with Sumang on beast mode and with guys like Olivares, Casajeros, and Santos stepping up, UE still has a chance to shock the world.

7. UP Fighting Maroons
(0 wins, 3 losses, 247.3 Team EFF)

Chris Ball has been really productive, averaging 7 points, 10 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per outing. Still even that isn’t enough to make UP fans feel good about this season.

8. Ateneo Blue Eagles
(0 wins, 3 losses, 172.6 Team EFF)

What can the Eagles do, now that they are deeper in defeat more than they have ever been ever since the new century began? An alarming thing is that only Chris Newsome and Ryan Buenafe have been really productive throughout their first three games. Things just haven’t clicked so far, and I am sure coach Bo is feeling a ton of pressure. – Rappler.com
