ALL-AMATEUR TEAM. Gilas Pilipinas continues to prove its potential dominance in Asia with an all-amateur team.

Gilas Pilipinas pushes through with its tournament preparations in the King Abdullah Cup in Amman, Jordan

The FIBA Asia Cup was postponed to July 2022, the international basketball federation announced on Friday, July 23.

The FIBA Asia Cup board made the decision as it took into consideration “multiple aspects” such as the travel restrictions, well-being of the participants, and fan access.

Gilas Pilipinas was slated to participate in the continental tournament originally scheduled from August 16 to 28, 2021 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Indonesia has been experiencing a surge of COVID-19 cases as it recorded 5,904 new cases on Wednesday, July 21. But instead of moving the tournament to another country, the FIBA board chose to retain the host city and delay the schedule instead.

Meanwhile, the Philippine team bannered by Thirdy Ravena and Dwight Ramos pushed through with its preparations as it left for Amman, Jordan, where they will participate in the King Abdullah Cup.

The Philippines qualified for the continental tournament with a perfect 6-0 record to top Group A, and delivered historic performances against South Korea despite being an all-amateur team. –
