Dennis Orcollo and Johann Gonzales Chua stay unbeaten, while Carlo Biado and Rodrigo Geronimo emerge victorious from the losers' bracket to reach the last 16

Filipinos make up one-fourth of the last 16 of the 2021 US Open Pool Championship as four stayed alive among the 256-man field in Atlantic City on Thursday, September 16 (Friday, September 17, Manila time).

Dennis Orcollo and Johann Gonzales Chua remained unbeaten, while Carlo Biado and Rodrigo Geronimo emerged victorious from the losers’ bracket to reach the last 16.

Orcollo, the runner-up in 2012 and 2014, notched his fifth consecutive win in the tournament after taking down Hungary’s Oliver Szolnoki, 11-6, to set up a last 16 date with Austria’s Mario He.

Chua, meanwhile, kept his unbeaten run intact with an 11-7 victory over Poland’s Mieszko Fortunski as he will face Canada’s John Morra next.

Starting the day off with an 11-3 rout of Switzerland’s Daniel Schneider in the losers’ bracket, Biado eliminated compatriot Jeffrey de Luna, 11-6, before he edged Scotland’s Jayson Shaw, 11-8, to barge into the last 16.

Biado will tangle with Spain’s David Alcaide Bermudez to kick off the knockout rounds.

Relegated to the losers’ bracket following a 2-11 mauling from Austria’s Max Lechner, Geronimo bounced back with an 11-6 win over the Netherland’s Niels Feijen to arrange a last 16 clash against Estonia’s Denis Grabe.

The four Filipinos are guaranteed to take home at least $3,750 each.

Other Filipinos who also saw action in the tournament include James Aranas, Jeffrey Ignacio, Roberto Gomez, Roland Garcia, and Warren Kiamco. – Rappler.com
