
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals defeated Maldives 2-0 in a FIFA friendly on Thursday, September 3 at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila, Philippines.
The two sides were scoreless at halftime, but an own goal by Maldives’ Mohamed Samdhooh broke the deadlock at 48’, which was followed by Jerry Lucena’s score at 55’.
The score was the Filipino-Danish defender’s second international goal, with the first coming also against Maldives in May 2014 at the AFC Challenge Cup.
The match against the 177th-ranked Maldives serves as a tuneup for the 125th ranked Philippines’ FIFA 2019 World Cup qualifying match against 76th ranked Uzbekistan, which takes place Tuesday, September 8 at 8 pm at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.
The Philippines is currently 2-0 in FIFA World Cup after wins over Bahrain and Yemen, while Uzbekistan is 0-1 after a 4-2 loss to North Korea. – Rappler.com
