PFL: Ceres bounces back; Kaya, Archers scrape late wins

MANILA, Philippines – Coming off a surprise draw with Stallion Laguna on opening day, Ceres Negros came back with a vengeance as it spoiled the much-awaited debut of Philippine Air Force,  5-0, while Kaya Iloilo and Green Archers United left it late to secure crucial 3 points in the Philippines Football League (PFL) on Wednesday, May 29.

Ceres banked on stellar performances from in-form talisman Bienvenido Marañon and Curt Dizon, who scored a hatrick and a brace respectively, to cruise to its first win of the season.

The Busmen initially found it hard to break down the Air Force backline in the 1st half, scoring the lone goal before the halftime break through a Marañon free kick.

They were only able to stamp their dominance on the field when Azkals mainstays Stephan Shrock and Mike Ott were introduced as substitutes in a feisty 2nd half affair that saw at least two cards handed out.

Meanwhile, over at the Biñan Football Stadium, Kaya Iloilo climbed to the top of the table with 6 points from two matches after a hard-earned 2-0 away win over Stallion Laguna.

Jovan Bedic (25’, PK) and Jordan Mintah (88’) scored on either side of the half but Kaya was far from its usual best as it had to rely on a man-of-the-match display by veteran keeper Michael Casas to keep Stallion at bay.

“Playing Stallion in their home is not easy but we came with a plan to stop their quick attacks and I’m happy that our preparations were successful,” said Kaya coach Noel Marcaida.

The last game of the day saw Green Archers United snatch a 1-0 victory over Global Cebu through a 72nd minute match-winner from De La Salle University standout Christian Zubiri.

At the back of a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Kaya last weekend, the win is a historic first for the Archers in the PFL after a long hiatus from top-tier club football in the country.

This weekend, Air Force and Stallion hope to bounce back from their respective losses as they clash before a classic between Ceres and Global. Matches are streamed at pfltv.ph. – Ferdin Sanchez/Rappler.com
