Former Dota 2 professional player Heinrich Abad dies just weeks after getting diagnosed with acute monoblastic leukemia

Former Dota 2 Filipino professional player Heinrich Abad died on Sunday, June 6, after a bout with acute monoblastic leukemia, which is cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

His partner, Bev Sausal, said the 29-year-old Abad got diagnosed with leukemia last May 12 and developed complications days after that led to his admission to the Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital.

Moments before his death, Sausal said Abad told her he wanted them to get married on Monday, June 7.

“It is a bittersweet feeling to know that you really thought about it. We had so many plans,” Sausal wrote on Facebook in Cebuano.

“Daddy, we will miss you, especially when you play love songs on the piano or guitar, which you’ll ask me to listen to.”

Considered one of the best Dota 2 players to hail from Cebu, Abad – who uses the in-game name “Heinrich” – once topped the solo ranked matchmaking rating (MMR) leaderboards of Southeast Asia.

He saw action for Arcanys Gaming, where he teamed up with Marvin “Boomy” Rushton and Jun “Bok” Kanehara, who are now playing for Southeast Asia powerhouse TNC Predator.

According to Sausal, Abad retired from the professional scene in 2015 to pursue a career in software engineering as he prepared for life as a family man and a father to their son. –
