Gameplan: Jungle night fishing

SUBIC BAY, Philippines -  The Jungle Survival Camp had a surprise for our three hosts. As the sun went down and the camp was covered in darkness, the three had to go fishing for shrimp in the river.

The catch? They would have to hike 2.5 hours through the jungle in the dark. There were snakes and spiders and the river rocks were slippery. And they would have to do it barefoot.

The three reacted to challenging conditions differently. Ton said, “It was kinda scary. I was pushed out of my comfort zone. My feet would slip on rocks. You don’t know what was there.”  Julian felt at home back in the  jungle.  Amanda found it exciting, “There was a sense of adventure that you didn’t know what was there.”

The night time trek wasn’t just about challenging themselves, it was about finding food. With an improvised spear, the three took turns catching shrimp and harvesting snails.

Of the experience, Julian said there’s a different feeling of accomplishment knowing you can catch your own dinner. While Amanda found she had a natural hunting instinct “Hunting is about being  one with nature because you are in their element. And you’re trying to catch them in their territory. It’s a thrill.”

Back in the camp, they grilled their catch and took to their tents for a good night’s sleep.  Waking up the next day, they reflected on the 2 days of living and surviving in an environment worlds away from their everyday lives. “I have learned that you can live without so many things.” Julian said.

While Ton reflected on the challenges of being out of his comfort zone “I learned that you really have to challenge yourself... you have to stay calm when you do things you’re not good at.”

Amanda mused, “I learned that I am stronger and more resilient out here. I’ve spend most of my life in comfort. I never thought that I’d enjoy being out here as much as I did.“ - Rappler.com
