Dwight Ramos and Carl Tamayo are expected to play significant roles for Gilas Pilipinas in the coming FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Serbia

Dwight Ramos and Carl Tamayo are in a race against time to recover from their respective injuries as Gilas Pilipinas’ campaign in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Serbia looms.

Ramos did not play in the Philippines’ tuneup game against China on Wednesday, June 23 that ended in a 79-79 draw as he sustained a groin injury after the third and final window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

“Dwight has got a strained muscle in his groin and we’re just not sure exactly what it is right now,” said Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tab Baldwin.

“He’s not ready to do any live activity and groin muscles, they’re pretty dodgy,” Baldwin added.

“You never know how long they’re going to last and they tend to recur easily, but we’re hopeful that it’s not too serious and he won’t be out long.”

Meanwhile, Tamayo hurt his ankle in the fourth quarter of the Philippines’ 76-51 victory over Indonesia in the Asia Cup Qualifiers last Friday, June 18.

Tamayo did not suit up in their last Asia Cup Qualifiers game against Korea last Sunday, June 20 and also sat out in the friendly against China.

“Carl is pretty close right now to getting back. I’d say a couple of more days and he can start training live,” Baldwin said.
