Filipino big man Kai Sotto is set to arrive in the country as he looks to reinforce Gilas Pilipinas

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) would “play it by ear” whether big man Kai Sotto will suit up for Gilas Pilipinas in the third and final window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Flying from the United States, the 7-foot-3 Sotto is set to arrive in the country late Monday, May 31, as he looks to reinforce the national team.

“We have to play it by ear,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas special assistant to the president Ryan Gregorio.

Before joining the Nationals, Sotto needs to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine, with the first 10 days to be spent in an accredited quarantine hotel or facility.

Sotto will be tested on the seventh day.

The quarantine put in doubt the possibility of Sotto playing in the final window of Asia Cup Qualifiers, which will be hosted by the SBP in Clark, Pampanga starting June 16.

Undefeated in Group C with a 3-0 record, Gilas Pilipinas will play South Korea twice and Indonesia once.

“What is important is he is already in town. Schedule is very fluid,” Gregorio said.

After the Asia Cup Qualifiers, the national team will fly to Serbia for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament that will run from June 29 to July 4. – Rappler.com
