Gilas Pilipinas will use the King Abdullah Cup in Jordan as preparation for the FIBA Asia Cup

The grind continues for Gilas Pilipinas as it is set to see action in the King Abdullah Cup in Jordan from July 25 to August 3 as part of its preparation for the FIBA Asia Cup.

Fresh from competing in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Serbia, the Filipinos will tangle with host Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Tunisia in the King Abdullah Cup.

“The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas wanted the team to get more games so we looked for the best possible option and decided that Jordan will be a great destination,” said SBP special assistant to the president Ryan Gregorio.

“Jordan has always been one of the better teams in Asia so going up against them should be beneficial for our young squad. We’re also looking forward to going up against Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Tunisia.”

The national team began its training camp at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna with 19 players in the pool, including returnees Thirdy Ravena, Rey Suerte, Allyn Bulanadi, Matt Nieto, Kemark Cariño, Dave Ildefonso, Jaydee Tungcab, and Tzaddy Rangel.

Back in the pool from the OQT are Dwight Ramos, Angelo Kouame, Justine Baltazar, RJ Abarrientos, SJ Belangel, William Navarro, Isaac Go, Jordan Heading, Carl Tamayo, Mike Nieto, and Geo Chiu.

Notably missing in the pool is Kai Sotto as the SBP continues to work with his camp regarding his schedule for the Asia Cup.

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tab Baldwin bared some members of the national team are still not in top shape after sustaining injuries, with only 15 of the 19 players in the pool flying to Jordan.

“Will and Carl are recovering from their respective injuries but should be cleared within the week,” Baldwin said. “Dwight, on the other hand, has fully recovered.”

The Philippines starts its campaign against Egypt on July 26 before it faces Saudi Arabia on July 27, Jordan B on July 28, Tunisia on July 29, and Jordan A on July 30.

Only the top four teams will advance and duke it out in the semifinals. – Rappler.com
