Gilas Youth falls short vs Argentina, stays winless in FIBA U19 World Cup

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas Youth put up a valiant effort but succumbed to Argentina, 72-77, in the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup at the Heraklion University Hall in Greece on Sunday, June 30 (Monday, July 1, Philippine time).

Dave Ildefonso finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and did most of the heavy lifting down the stretch for the Philippines, but Argentina built enough lead to escape with the victory.

Down by as many as 15 points in the final frame, the Filipinos did not fall apart and managed to shave their deficit to 4 points, 69-73, off back-to-back Ildefonso and Gerry Abadiano three-pointers.

However, the Argentinians coolly sank 4 straight free throws in the final 33 seconds to stay undefeated in two games in Group C.

Kai Sotto chalked up 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 blocks, while Abadiano chipped in 9 points and 5 assists for the Philippines, which remained winless in two outings as it played without the injured AJ Edu.

The Filipino-Nigerian Edu is feared to have suffered an ACL and meniscal tear on his right knee during their 69-85 loss to Greece a day ago.

James Spencer scored all of his 9 points from long distance, while Carl Tamayo chimed in 8 points and 9 rebounds in the losing effort.

Marco Giordano delivered the goods for Argentina with 18 points, as Francisco Farabello and Lucas Reyes added 15 points each.

The Philippines seeks for a breakthrough victory when it clashes with Russia on Tuesday, July 2 (Wednesday, July 3, Philippine time). –
