CESAFI: Green Lancers blow out Warriors to take 2-0 advantage

CEBU CITY, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers are now one game away from clinching their 11th collegiate title in the 2016 College Basketball tournament after annihilating the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 69-53, in Game 2 of their best-of-5 series, Monday, October 17, at the New Cebu Coliseum.

In the game held earlier, the Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma clinched third place after sweeping the third place series by outsmarting the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 72-68.

Having not factored much during the elimination round, Jan Monic Soliva once again made the biggest contribution with another double-double performance of 10 points and 14 rebounds. It was, however, Rey Anthony Suerte who topscored for UV with 13 points.

UV’s defense combined with the several mistakes that USC committed saw no Warriors finishing in double figures, with their topscorer Ian Jefferson Tagapan finishing with 9 points.

Aside from not hitting their field goals, the Warriors also struggled from the free throw line going 15 of 33 while committing 21 turnovers.

Further complicating things for USC was their season’s lead scorer Kevin Oleodo being held to 4 points.

The UV Green Lancers capitalized on USC Warriors’ mistakes and even held the defending champions to 10 points in the third quarter.

After deadlocking the game thrice in the first quarter, UV then took a 4-point lead, 17-13, going into the second canto.

From there, they did not relinquished the lead and built their advantage to as many as 23 points, 55-32, after Sheldon Gahi’s basket with less than two minutes left in the third.

Meanwhile, in the fight for third place, making sure to close out the series early was two-time MVP Mark Jayven “Macmac” Tallo who finished the season with 16 points while doing his best to extend the series for the Jaguars was Ralph Jude “RJ” Dinolan who ended the season with 19 points.

Game 3 will be on Thursday, October 20 at 5 pm in the same venue. Should the UV Green Lancers win, it will be the first time that a team has swept the title series since 2005.

UV last won the collegiate title in 2013 against SWU.
