OAKLAND, California — The Golden State Warriors celebrated their championship with a grand parade after outplaying the Cleveland Cavaliers en route to a 105-97 victory in game 6 of the National Basketball Association Finals.

The streets of downtown Oakland were flooded in blue and gold as an estimated one million fans including hardcore Filipino fans from the Bay Area and all over California welcomed the newly crowned world champs early morning Friday, June 19. The parade kicked off at 10am starting from 11th street and Broadway Street, passed along Grand Avenue then ended at Oak, south side of Lake Merritt.

“I have never seen anything like this before”, says Angela Gatpandan, a Filipina nurse who came with her family and has been a Bay Area resident for the last 20 years. “If there’s one thing the Warriors should be proud of, it’s their loyal fans”, she added.

Dub Nation was in full force chanting, “MVP, MVP” as the float carrying Andre Iguodala and Stephen Curry who brought his daughter Riley, passed the crowd. Included in the parade of floats are former player Nate Thurmond, and coach Al Attles from the 1975 championship team. Oakland and San Francisco mayors, Libby Schaaf and Ed Lee also participated.

A ceremony honoring the team was held at Oakland’s Kaiser Convention Center.

“We did it. We did it. NBA Champions!” as Warriors owner Joe Lacob opened his speech. “Guys, this was no accident. Nothing about this was an accident. And it will not be an accident when we do it again!” he continued.

The Warriors ended the regular season with 67 wins capping the league’s best record with the title after 40 years of championship drought. Steve Kerr led the team to a championship in his first year as head coach. Stephen Curry was named the league’s most valuable player and Andre Iguodala the Finals.
