Chanelle Molina’s path to becoming the first Filipino to play in the WNBA suffered a major blow, as she was waived by the Indiana Fever on the second day of the team’s training camp on Monday, April 26 (Tuesday, April 27, Manila time).
Based on Molina’s Instagram Stories, it appears that she sustained a right ankle injury during the start of the Fever’s training camp, which ultimately led to her being cut from the 20-woman roster.
“Praying your ankle gets healed soon. Still so proud of you,” wrote Molina’s sister, Celena.
“Just another obstacle you’ll get through. Praying for a lightning speed recovery,” wrote her other sister, Cherilyn.
The 22-year-old Molina, who went undrafted in 2020 after playing 4 years for Washington State in NCAA Division 1, last saw action in the Swedish Basketball League, where she averaged 18.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in 15 games for the Norrkoping Dolphins.
She then signed a historic training camp contract with the Fever in February, making her the first full-blooded Filipina to achieve this feat. – Rappler.com
