Filipino karateka James delos Santos claims his 24th international gold to solidify his hold on the world No. 1 ranking

Filipino karateka James delos Santos snagged his second gold in the 5th SportData eTournament World Series on Saturday, November 28.

Delos Santos defeated Switzerland’s Matias Moreno, 24.9-23.7, to increase his international gold medal tally to 24.

A victory in a world series event will quadruple the points earned from a regular international tournament, allowing the Filipino stalwart to solidify his world No. 1 ranking.

“I’m widening the gap even further in the eKata world rankings since this e-tournament is nearly 4 times the amount of ranking points. Forward is the only way to go!” said Delos Santos.

The 30-year-old kata specialist clinched the top ranking last October 15, overtaking rival Eduardo Garcia of Portugal.

Prior to the 5th edition of the world series, Delos Santos tallied a total of 11,920 points since the start of the virtual kata tournaments last March. Garcia trails behind with 8,740 points.

Delos Santos earned his world ranking after joining virtual kata tournaments, which kicked off in March 2020.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, only virtual kata tournaments are being held. The athletes send their videos online, which will be judged by referees. – Rappler.com
