MANILA, Philippines – Still unbeaten in the 41st William Jones Cup, Mighty Sports-Go for Gold is definitely serious in wanting nothing less than a championship once it’s all said and done.
Despite playing its fifth game in as many days, the Charles Tiu-coached squad overcame a battle-hardened South Korean national team with an 89-82 squeaker.
If not for the efforts of Mighty’s 5 imports, however, the World Cup-ready chemistry of the Koreans would have given Mighty its first loss.
Still, with arguably their biggest test out of the way, coach Tiu and the rest of the coaching staff can again get back to giving more touches to their Filipino stars like Jeremiah Gray, Mikey Williams, Jason Brickman and Roosevelt Adams.
Their next match against Indonesia would be a great place to continue their momentum, as their foes have yet to win another game in the annual tourney after their first one against college-based Canada. Recently, the Indonesians also lost by 62 against Korea, by far the worst loss in this year’s Jones Cup.
If all goes well, other Filipinos could see more time to hone their craft like Aaron Black, Gab Banal and Joseph Yeo in the match set on Friday, July 19 at 3 pm.
However, if Mighty is not careful enough, an upset loss against Indonesia would only complicate its title aspirations in this win-based tourney.
Will Mighty Sports continue its hot streak towards the title or will Indonesia trip up the Philippine squad on the way there?
