MANILA, Philippines – Batang Gilas standout and San Sebastian high school basketball star Lorenzo Navarro is leaning towards committing to play college basketball for the De La Salle University Green Archers, making the jump from NCAA to UAAP.
Caracut and Go, who are from San Beda high school and Hope Christian high school, respectively, have already formally announced their commitments to La Salle. Like Navarro, both standouts play the guard positions.
If Navarro does pick La Salle, he and the two aforementioned recruits will make up for the suddenly depleted guard rotation of the Green Archers, who won the UAAP men’s basketball title in 2013 and was in the Final Four round in 2014.
La Salle lost starting shooting guard Almond Vosotros this past offseason due to his graduation, while back-up guards Terrence Mustre and Robert Bolick have both elected to transfer schools, switching to Adamson University and San Beda College, respectively.
Navarro, 5-foot-8, put up 12 points on a daily basis for San Sebastian. He also dished around 4 to 5 assists per game. He's a menace on defense racking up around two to 3 steals a contest.
Against the San Beda Red Cubs in the finals of the 2nd PSSBC Finals in December 2013, Navarro was named the Finals MVP after putting up 32 points, 13 assists, 11 rebounds, and 2 steals.
In his senior campaign, San Sebastian finished at 9-9, which wasn’t good enough to make the Final Four as the Staglets missed the services of some of their graduated players like Michael Calisaan and Ryan Costelo. But Navarro did well enough to turn heads and garner the attention of college recruits.
“San Sebastian will always be a big part of who I am and I will carry with me all the values of a true Sebastinian wherever I go,” Navarro once said in an interview with Rappler.
