MANILA, Philippines – Globalport leaders Sol Mercado and Jay Washington headed a huge rally in the second half to oust the Meralco Bolts, 93-89 in the PLDT myDSL PBA Philippine Cup on Friday, December 6 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Batang Pier outscored the Bolts in the third quarter, 29-18 with veterans Mercado and Washington combining for 19 big points.
Meralco actually took the driver's seat, 46-37 at the break but the Batang Pier quickly erased the deficit after a big turnaround in the third period.
A shootout ensued in the final quarter, with both teams battling toe-to-toe for the victory.
Mercado's breakaway layup with exactly 4 minutes gave the Batang Pier an 82-75 edge.
A triple by Jared Dillinger and a getaway basket by Gary David made it 82-84 before a big trey by RR Garcia gave Globalport an 87-82 advantage with just 64 ticks left.
But Mercado muffed three of his next four charities that left the door open for Meralco. John Wilson buried a long range bomb to bring Meralco within 87-90, 11.3 seconds to go.
Garcia came with a split but Marvin Hayes collared the offensive rebound that iced the win for Globalport.
Mercado finished with 33 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists while Jay Washington added 27 points, 10 boards, and 3 dimes. The two poured 35 points in the second half to help the Batang Pier snap a two-game losing skid.
