Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion lays out Carlos Yulo's Olympic medal chances

Things are looking upbeat for Philippine world champion gymnast Carlos Yulo in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

According to Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) president Cynthia Carrion, Yulo is aiming for an Olympic gold in the men’s floor exercise and a silver in the vault events.

“What we’re working on with Coach Mune (Kugimiya) is [Caloy] will win a gold medal in the floor, silver in vault, and will be in the finals of the parallel bar,” said Carrion on Tuesday, July 6, in the weekly online Philippine Sportswriter’s Association (PSA) Forum.

Carrion said that Yulo is very confident in his performance in the floor exercises after seeing the competition around him.

“He’s doing very well. When there was an all-Japan competition, he didn’t join the floor, he watched all the floor, but he says he’s still the best in Japan,” shared Carrion.

In the all-Japan competition, the 21-year-old bagged a bronze in the parallel bars.

Yulo, who won the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in the floor exercise, will be kicking off his Olympic campaign on July 24 for the qualifying rounds.

This is the reason why he had to beg off from the offer of becoming the country’s flag-bearer in the biggest global sports showpiece to be staged from July 23 to August 8.

The 4-foot-11 dynamo has been preparing the quadrennial meet in Tokyo, Japan, joining multiple training camps with the “best gymnasts in Japan.”

He also received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer) three weeks ago, and is scheduled to get the second one next week.
