WATCH: Breakout star Christian Wood suffers scary ankle injury

One the NBA’s most inspiring ongoing stories turned a dark chapter on Friday, February 5, Manila time, as Houston Rockets breakout star Christian Wood suffered a serious-looking ankle injury against the Memphis Grizzlies.

With the post-Harden Rockets blowing out the Grizzlies, 70-49, with 8:05 left in the 3rd quarter, Wood raced up the floor for a fastbreak layup, but landed awkwardly on the foot of star guard Ja Morant, and immediately crumpled to the floor in pain.

Broadcasters noted that the former undrafted big man already rolled his right ankle weeks prior to the new injury, and Wood had to be carried off the floor and into a wheelchair by his teammates.

Although the Rockets won 115-103, thanks to John Wall’s 22 points and 8 assists, it was a hollow victory to say the least as Wood is likely set to miss some time after a 17-point, 7-rebound effort in 20 minutes on the floor.

The Rockets are concerned that star center Christian Wood could be sidelined for an extended period after injuring his right ankle for the second time in a span of less than three weeks, sources told ESPN.

Prior to the injury, Wood was having an All-Star caliber run in his expanded role with the Rockets, averaging 22.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks in just 31.9 minutes per game.

The 25-year-old is also an early Most Improved Player candidate after norming just 13.1 points, and 6.3 rebounds in a backup center role with the Detroit Pistons last season.

Before finding a consistent role in Detroit and Houston, Wood was practically a non-factor in the league, as he bounced around 4 different teams, and appeared in just 51 games in his first 3 seasons. – Rappler.com
