‘Being a 9-year NBA veteran doesn’t protect me from being called ‘coronavirus’ on the court,’ says one-time NBA champion Jeremy Lin

Former NBA star Jeremy Lin voiced his frustration on social media and spoke about the growing number of hate crimes and racism towards Asian Americans.

The Taiwanese-American Lin, who is currently playing for the Santa Cruz Warriors in the NBA G League, revealed he has been called “coronavirus” on the court inside the Disney World bubble in Orlando, Florida.

“Being a 9 year NBA veteran doesn’t protect me from being called ‘coronavirus’ on the court,” wrote Lin.

Lin, the first Asian-American player to win a championship in the NBA, also explained how Asian Americans like him experience racism.

“We are tired of being told that we don’t experience racism, we are tired of being told to keep our heads down and not make trouble. We are tired of Asian American kids growing up and being asked where they’re REALLY from, of having our eyes mocked, of being objectified as exotic or being told we’re inherently unattractive,” said Lin.

“We are tired of the stereotypes in Hollywood affecting our psyche and limiting who we think we can be. We are tired of being invisible, of being mistaken for our colleague or told our struggles aren’t as real,” he continued.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the G League is opening an investigation on this incident inside the bubble.

The 32-year-old Lin, who is known for his unforgettable “Linsanity” run in 2012 while playing for the New York Knicks, is averaging 19.6 points, 7.2 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 5 games for the Santa Cruz Warriors this season. – Rappler.com
