Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James added yet another milestone to his legendary career after clinching his 35,000th career point against the Brooklyn Nets on Friday, February 19, Manila time.
The 36-year-old All-Star reached this mark with his 15th point off a free throw at the 47.1-second mark of the 2nd quarter. At the same time, James also became the lone player in NBA history to have 35,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, and 9,000 assists.
It was the only positive highlight of the Lakers’ eventual 109-98 defeat as they played without starters Anthony Davis and Dennis Schroder. The Nets, on the other hand, did not have Kevin Durant, but still had All-Stars James Harden and Kyrie Irving available.
Despite the loss, James is still firmly on pace to break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time career scoring record of 38,387 points as he breached the 35,000-point mark two whole years younger than the Hall of Fame big man.
Speaking of Hall of Fame big men, the NBA’s second all-time leading scorer Karl Malone only made it to 35,000 points at 39 years old, 3 whole years older than James.
This scoring sprint from “The King” is nothing new, however, as he was also the youngest to breach the 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, 25,000, and 30,000-point barriers across his illustrious 18-year career so far.
He is also only a year removed from settling into his place at third after passing the late great Kobe Bryant at 33,643 points.
James may likely break the all-time scoring record in just two seasons more at age 38.
If he stays healthy, he may even breach the still-untouched 40,000-point barrier when all is said and done, but that is a discussion still a bit far off into the future.
Given that he has had no indication of slowing down whatsoever, ascending to the all-time scoring throne for “The King” may no longer be a question of “if,” but “when.” – Rappler.com
