Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra joined two elite NBA clubs as he notched his 600th regular season win.
The Filipino-American became the 27th head coach in NBA history to achieve such feat as he guided the Heat to a 116-111 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, April 28 (Thursday, April 29, Manila time).
Also, Spoelstra put himself in exclusive company as the sixth head coach in league history to win 600 regular season games with a single franchise.
Other head coaches in the special group include Gregg Popovich (San Antonio Spurs), Jerry Sloan (Utah Jazz), Phil Jackson (Los Angeles Lakers), Red Auerbach (Boston Celtics), and Red Holzman (New York Knicks).
“It is humbling. I always think about Pat (Riley) and Micky (Arison), for having this incredible opportunity to be able to coach with this franchise,” Spoelstra said after the Heat-Spurs game.
“I feel a great responsibility to do it the right way for something they started and created,” he added.
Starting as a video coordinator for the Heat in 1995, Spoelstra climbed up the ladder on the way to earning a spot in the coaching staff.
The 50-year-old got promoted to head coach in 2008 as he succeeded Riley, who called the shots for the Heat for 11 seasons.
Spoelstra led the Heat to back-to-back NBA championships in 2012 and 2013 and a total of 5 finals appearances.
Through 13 seasons, Spoelstra has compiled a 600-422 regular season record for a winning percentage of .587.
“I always think what Pat told when he first told me I was going to be the head coach. He said just embrace it, enjoy it to the best that you can every single day, but it is going to go by like that,” Spoelstra said with a snap.
“You’re going to blink and it is going to be 10 years into your career.” – Rappler.com
