The Boston Celtics’ worries just shot up a few levels on Saturday, January 30 (Sunday, January 31, Manila time), and it’s not because of their 95-96 loss against all-time rival Los Angeles Lakers.
Two-way ace Marcus Smart failed to finish the close duel after he suffered a non-contact injury early in the 4th quarter during a rebound battle against Lakers big man Montrezl Harrell.
Right now, many are fearing the worst as Smart’s feet were nowhere close to anyone else’s, and he immediately clutched his left calf on the way down. He had to be assisted off the court, and was ruled out immediately.
Multiple early reports stated that Smart, the longest-tenured current Celtic, suffered a left calf strain, but is still set for an MRI to fully assess the damage. Right now, fans and teammates are hoping the worst won’t come for the team’s vocal leader.
Smart is currently averaging career-highs of 13.6 points, 6.0 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks on 40% shooting, and was the team’s starting point guard prior to the return of former All-Star Kemba Walker.
The 6-foot-3 bruiser has since moved back to his natural shooting guard position alongside Walker, and is still averaging 32.7 minutes, the third-most behind team stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. – Rappler.com
