
MANILA, Philippine – In a rematch of last year’s NCAA finals, Arellano University pulled off an 88-84 upset against the defending 5-peat NCAA champion San Beda College on Tuesday, August 18 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
Jiovani Jalalon headed Arellano in the final period and mustered 22 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals to improve the Jerry Condiñera-mentored brigade’s standing to 6-3.
Aside from Jalalon, Dioncee Holts amassed 21 markers, 11 boards and 5 steals for the Chiefs, who spearheaded a 16-7 blitz in the fourth quarter to pull away with a 84-73 cushion.
Arellano lambasted San Beda with a 30-point output in the first canto before the Red Lions picked up the pace and conceded 25 points in the next two quarters for a 61-55 lead entering the fourth frame.
The Chiefs regained the momentum as Jalalon buried back-to-back triples, but San Beda responded with 5 straight buckets.
San Beda was only down by two with 1.3 left in the regulation, but Holts hammered the final nail in the coffin by sinking two charities.
Bedan back-up center Donald Tankoua registered 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Dan Sara chipped in 16 baskets for the Mendiola-based troop.
However, Art Dela Cruz only had 11 points as San Beda falls to a 7-2 win-loss card and ties with University of Perpetual Help System Dalta at second place.
