Arellano holds off San Sebastian, extends win streak to 4

MANILA, Philippines – Behind strong performances from Jiovani Jalalon and Dioncee Holts, the Arellano Chiefs won their fourth straight game in the 2015 NCAA men’s basketball tournament by taking down the San Sebastian Stags, 104-92, onFriday, July 25, at the San Juan Arena.

Jalalon registered only 8 points but dished out a league-high 16 assists to go with 6 boards, while Holts put up 21 points and grabbed 12 boards in the win for the Chiefs, who improved to 4-1.

Bradwyn Guinto put up 26 points and 18 rebounds in the loss as San Sebastian fell to 1-4. Michael Calisaan also helped out with 20 markers.

Donald Gumaru and Zach Nichols both played well for the winning side, finishing with a combined 26 points and 6 3-pointers. 

Nichols’ 3-pointer put his team ahead 87-77 with over 6 minutes remaining in the contest. A Guinto basket later cut the deficit to 6, but it didn’t take long for Holts to hit a 3-ball and Jalalon to convert a spin move and basket that made the count 92-85.

Not long after, Gumaru nailed a triple from the corner to put Arellano on top by 10, 95-85, with 2:26 left, sealing the win.

As a team, the Chiefs hit 14 3-pointers - 6 coming in the final period. It was the second straight game the Stags allowed an opponent to hit 6 3-pointers in the fourth quarter after they allowed Letran to do the same last Tuesday.
