St. Benilde gets a timely lift from the returning Migs Oczon to grab the solo top spot

MANILA, Philippines – Migs Oczon returned with a solid outing after a two-game absence to power College of Saint Benilde back to the solo NCAA top spot.

Oczon collected 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists as the CSB Blazers turned back the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 73-61, in the men’s basketball tournament Saturday, October 1, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

Benilde moved out of a tie with Lyceum for the league’s best record at 5-1.

“I just trusted my teammates. I trusted the system,” said Oczon, who was sidelined due to an illness. ”I’m going to repay the trust they gave me.”

Miggy Corteza added 12 points, 8 boards and 2 blocks for the Blazers, while Will Gozum came through with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

The Blazers took command in the fourth quarter as Prince Carlos completed a three-point play to give his squad a 63-52 lead at the 8:39 mark.

It was a tough payoff period for the Generals, who struggled mightily from the field, shooting 4-of-18 as they went down to their fifth consecutive loss.

In the second game, Perpetual Help escaped San Sebastian, 61-57, to improve to a 3-3 record.

Jielo Razon dropped 14 points, highlighted by a pair of clutch triples that put the Altas up, 59-57, in the final stretch.

Marcus Nitura (9 points, 12 rebounds) and Mark Denver Omega (9 points, 11 rebounds) also delivered for the Altas, who pushed the Stags down to 2-3.
