Sophomore sensation Mac Guadana wins the third Collegiate Press Corps NCAA Player of the Week award after leading LPU to a surprising league-best record ahead of other contenders like San Beda and Letran

MANILA, Philippines – In the NCAA Season 97 men’s basketball tournament, former league finalist LPU sunk to a 2-7 record and out of Final Four contention.

However, the tides have turned quickly for the Pirates this Season 98, as they are currently cruising a league-best 5-1 record with wins against San Beda, Mapua, and for last week, Perpetual and two-time defending champion Letran.

Off a 20-point outburst with three triples against the title-holding Knights, LPU rising star Mac Guadana left no doubt that he deserves the third Collegiate Press Corps NCAA Player of the Week presented by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

The 21-year-old guard stayed hot over the last two contests with averages of 16.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.5 steals – pushing him past other worthy candidates like teammate Enoch Valdez, Arellano’s Axel Doromal, CSB’s JC Cullar, San Beda’s James Kwekuteye, and Perpetual’s Jielo Razon.

For his part, Guadana said he and his teammates are far from finished.

“I just hate losing. That’s why I keep on working on things that will help the team and there, it bore fruit,” said the former Batang Gilas standout who won the weekly award decided by print and online media beat writers, and backed by minor sponsors MNL Kingpin, Tinapayan Festival, and Jockey.

“I can maintain these types of performances by continuing what I do extra work on, and of course, I’ll keep adding to that level of effort,” Guadana added. – Rappler.com
