Western Visayas nips Central Luzon in come-from-behind win
Teamwork pushes Western Visayas to win over Central Luzon in goalball

TAGUM CITY, Philippines – Region VI’s goalball players used their keenness of hearing as they defied visual impairment gaining a come-from-behind win over Region III with a solitary goal lead, 6-5, at St. Mary’s College Mini-Gym on Thursday, May 7.

Headed by their coach Grace Malata, the three-man team from Western Visayas vied for their first win with visually disabled athletes, namely, Rodel Diaz who has low-capacity vision, Edgardo Amisola, a partially blind athlete, and the totally blind Dave Buenavista.

After their miserable loss against Bicol Region on Tuesday, May 5, Western Visayas finally got their first victory in Match 16 as Rodel Diaz successfully fired their sixth goal in the last minute of action during the second half to break the deadlock score, 5-5.

Central Luzon nailed three consecutive goals in the early minutes of the second half putting pressure on Western Visayas’ squad.

“Naging crucial iyong laro namin pero dahil sa enhancement ng kanilang strength at teamwork, napanalo namin ang laro,” Coach Grace said.

(The odds were against us but thanks to their strength and teamwork we still managed to win the game.)

Exchanging their powerful throws and swift slides to block the attacks, both sides set the seasaw score and ended the first half in a deadlock, 2-2.

Though Western Visayas missed the 4 penalty throws, they still grabbed the win brought by their proper training, camaraderie, communication skills and sharp hearing ability, according to Coach Grace.

Region VI is determined to improve their 5th Place finish from last year’s Palarong Pambansa and eyes the gold medal by beating defending champion Davao Region.

“We need to improve our performance talaga para manalo ng gold medal,” Region VI’s Chaperon Rhea Lozada quoted.

Prior to his match, the goalball athletes with eye cataract from Bicol Region razed Central Visayas with a 10-6 victory and got their second win in Match 15.

Meanwhile, the defending champion Region XI is taking its title defense by defeating Bicol Region with 16-5 score in the previous games.
