KUNSHAN, China – Pasig Chooks-to-Go could not replicate its group stage success in the Doha Masters, suffering two quick losses in Pool A of the 2019 Kunshan Challengers on Saturday, May 18.
To open the day, Joshua Munzon and Pasig could not sustain their strong start against Russian club Sosnovy Bor, falling 19-21 with 1:28 left in the game.
Behind Munzon, the reigning Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 President's Cup champions raced to an 11-7 lead midway through the contest.
But Taylor Statham was off defensively as he was foul-plagued all game long.
Statham committed Pasig's 10th foul of the game, which resulted in an and-one to tie the game at 17-all.
Munzon tried to stop the bleeding, but Vladislav Meleshkin's deuce ended the contest.
Less than two hours after suffering a heartbreaking loss to Sosnovy Bor, Pasig Chooks-to-Go could not pick themselves up.
Pasig was shown the door by Serbian powerhouse Liman, 12-22.
Munzon scored a total of 16 points in the day, 10 against Sosnovy Bor. Statham scored 6 points per game.
Still, Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 league owner Ronald Mascariñas said they cannot sulk as there is a whole slate of Challengers and World Tour Masters to look forward to.
"We lost to the better teams today. Taylor, Joshua, Troy, and Dylan, you played with a lot of heart and we are proud of you," Mascariñas said.
"We are not giving up on our Olympic dream because of this setback. We will continue to prepare and play harder to make our country proud."
Up next for Pasig is the Tinkoff Moscow 2019 from June 7 to 8. This will be a qualifier for the Prague Masters. – Rappler.com
