Meralco shocks Talk ‘N Text for lopsided win
Six Meralco Bolts score in double figures as the Bolts snatch a win against sister-team Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters

MANILA, Philippines – The Meralco Bolts barely missed from the field and collectively shot 56% on their way to a franchise-best winning margin of 119-85 against the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in the 2015 PBA Governors’ Cup on Tuesday, June 2 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Import Andre Emmett led 6 bolts in double figures with a spread out effort of 36 points and 7 rebounds. He also shot 6-of-6 from three-point land. Sean Anthony had a double-double night of 24 points and 12 rebounds as well as 6 assists.

Jared Dillinger went 7-of-10 from the field for 14 points and 8 rebounds off the bench, while Gary David and Mike Cortez had 12 and 11 points, respectively. Cortez shot 3-of-3 from long range.

“It’s really nice to get some momentum and try to establish a winning streak even if it’s only two games,” said head coach Norman Black, as his team played efficient basketball with all but two of his scorers shooting 50% and above.

“We talked about it in the locker room before the game that we needed to find a personality for ourselves and find a way to win basketball games and stick with that. And we did that today.”

Meralco’s identity turned defensive as they limited usual offensive reliables Jayson Castro and Ranidel de Ocampo to just 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Castro, whose off-night comes after a 34-point explosion against Globalport last week, added 6 assists and had 5 turnovers while De Ocampo grabbed 6 boards.

Talk ‘N Text had Steffphone Pettigrew carrying the load with 21 points and 13 rebounds as Harvey Carey added 10 markers.

“I’m really happy with the teamwork and the progress of the team in the last couple of games. Now we just have to continue to build on it,” Black said.

Meralco nearly gave Talk ‘N Text its worst loss in franchise history with a 35-point lead late in the fourth.

But the Texters instead equaled their worst losing margin of 34 points. They lost by 122-88 against Petron in the 2013 Governors’ Cup, per PBA Head Statistician Fidel Mangonon III.

The Bolts began pulling away in the second period as they shot 62% and entered halftime with a 61-49 edge.

Meralco climbed to 4-3 after back-to-back wins while Talk ‘N Text fell to 3-3.
