After his stunning decision to take a break from the PBA last February, Barangay Ginebra big man Greg Slaughter has expressed his desire to return to the Gin Kings on Tuesday, December 29.
The 32-year-old veteran took to social media to also apologize to Ginebra management for apparent miscommunication regarding the break he took after his contract expired.
“Basketball has been my life for close to 30 years, and I needed to step away for a while in order to start enjoying the game again. The time away has made me a better person in all aspects and now, as a married man, I am very excited at the prospect of being able to play again,” he said.
“My only regret is that the communication between myself and management, particularly Boss [Ramon Ang] and Coach Alfrancis Chua, did not go as smoothly as I would have wanted,” he continued.
“I want to apologize to them and the rest of management for any misunderstanding or bad feelings that may have occurred because of my decision.”
Shortly after winning the 2020 Philippine Cup in the Pampanga bubble, Ginebra head coach Tim Cone immediately aired his wish to see Slaughter again with the team in future conferences, whenever they may get underway amid the pandemic.
“I would love to have Greg back on the team. That would help Japeth [Aguilar] out in terms of giving him a break, and we could be a little bit more creative in the way we play, he said after the championship ceremony.
“We get Greg back and move forward to the All-Filipino.”
If Ginebra management would allow it, it seems that Slaughter is ready to get back in the mix, and help defend the title that his team just won.
“My only wish now for the coming year is to leave that in the past and have the opportunity to suit up again for the best fans in the world,” he said.
Prior to his sabbatical, the 7-foot pride of Cebu averaged 8.0 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks in just 20.2 minutes per game in the 2019 Governors’ Cup. He also normed 14.2 points, and 8.4 boards in his last All-Filipino Conference run.
“I have learned so much this past year, and I am excited to show everyone that the next phase of my career will be the best one yet,” he said. – Rappler.com
