Calvin Abueva suspended indefinitely by Alaska

MANILA, Philippines – Alaska has put star Calvin Abueva on an indefinite suspension.

The Aces will be playing without Abueva for the meantime after the energetic forward went missing for more than a week. He did not attend several team practices and Alaska's 109-103 win over the GlobalPort Batang Pier last June 2.

Alaska owner Wilfred Uytengsu said in a statement that even though Abueva may be dealing with "troubling personal issues," he is still held responsible by the team.

"The Alaska Aces has placed Calvin Abueva on indefinite suspension following his more than one week absence from practice and failing to advise the coaching staff and management of his whereabouts," Uytengsu said.

"While the team understands Calvin may be going through some troubling personal issues, it does not obviate his responsibility to his team. The suspension is effective immediately."

"Alaska, however, will allow Abueva to play for Gilas if coach Chot Reyes choose to use him in the line up."

Right after pouring in 41 points and 27 rebounds in Gilas Pilipinas' 141-157 loss to the Visayas All-Stars in the final leg of the All-Star Week last May 27, Abueva went AWOL for the Aces.

Even Alaska head coach Alex Compton, following their win against GlobalPort, admitted they were "not sure where he is."

The 30-year-old, averaging 10.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.2 blocks in 5 outings in the Commissioner's Cup, also missed a game and team practices last conference due to personal problems.

The Aces (5-1), who are already missing Jeron Teng following a stabbing incident, seek to extend their winning streak to 6 games when they face the Magnolia Hotshots at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, June 10. – Rappler.com
