PBA commissioner Willie Marcial says the referees made the right judgment by not calling a foul on Scottie Thompson as he completed a steal on San Miguel import Devon Scott that preserved the comeback win for Ginebra

MANILA, Philippines – As much as San Miguel import Devon Scott feels he got fouled late in their sorry loss to Barangay Ginebra on Sunday, November 6, the PBA is sticking with its referees’ decision not to blow the whistle.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial on Monday, November 7, said the referees made the right judgment by not calling a foul on Scottie Thompson as he completed a steal on Scott that preserved the Gin Kings’ 97-96 comeback victory.

With a shot at winning the game for the Beermen, Scott lost the ball with 4.8 ticks left following a double team from Thompson and Justin Brownlee.

“It was a correct non-call,” Marcial said in Filipino.

Scott lamented there should have been a foul as he tried to retrieve the ball only to lose his balance after getting bumped by Thompson.

“I’ve played a lot of basketball in a lot of different places and that is a foul anywhere else in the world,” said Scott.

“There is no way in the world of basketball any player can run through another player to get the basketball and not be a foul.”

In the end, though, Scott conceded San Miguel should not have been in that precarious situation if only the Beermen managed to protect their lead.

San Miguel got outscored 34-16 in the final quarter, with Thompson draining a clutch three-pointer in the dying seconds that gave Ginebra its first lead of the game, and eventually, the win.

“It is our fault for being in that position. I should’ve been better down the stretch and made it to where we’re in a back-and-forth game. I should’ve been better,” said Scott, who finished with 26 points, 21 rebounds, and 4 assists.

“But that play is a foul. If that same play happens with me and I do that to him, that is a foul. But the refs did not see it that way, we did not get the call, and the game is over. We lost.”

As the Beermen saw their two-game winning streak snapped, Scott said the heartbreaking loss will only strengthen San Miguel.

“[I]t is a tough loss. But at the end of the day, my mentality is we never lose, we always learn. We learned a lot of lessons today.” – Rappler.com
