‘We always do it for Calvin,’ says emotional Topex
Overcome by emotions, coach Topex Robinson dedicates Phoenix’s 17-point comeback win to embattled star Calvin Abueva

Even after Phoenix staged an incredible comeback win, coach Topex Robinson couldn’t quite celebrate.

Robinson shed tears following the Fuel Masters’ huge come-from-behind victory over the Magnolia Hotshots in the PBA Philippine Cup on Friday, October 23.

Overcome by emotions, the new Phoenix coach said it’s always difficult to head into the game minus their embattled star Calvin Abueva, whom he refers to as his “son.”

“I think one of the big reasons for us to really not give up is, it’s really hard to leave the gym or leave the hotel knowing that one of your sons is not with you,” said Robinson.

Abueva, who also had Robinson as his San Sebastian coach in the NCAA, sat out his fifth straight game in the league bubble in Pampanga as he continues to serve his indefinite suspension.

But the Fuel Masters came out fighting, wiping out a 17-point deficit in the 3rd period and unleashing a massive 22-0 run in the final frame to escape the Hotshots and snap their two-game losing skid. (READ: Massive Phoenix comeback stuns Magnolia)

“We don’t want to lose again and go back to the hotel knowing that Calvin wants to help us and the best thing that he could do is just practice, cheer and pray for us,” said Robinson.

“We just don’t want to give up and he doesn’t want to give up, so we always do it for Calvin.”

Abueva – who hasn’t seen action for over a year due to separate incidents involving Ray Parks’ girlfriend Maika Rivera and former Talk ‘N Text import Terrence Jones – had already completed the requirements from the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) to have his professional license reinstated.

Although the PBA allowed him to join team practices inside the bubble, Abueva still hasn’t gotten the green light to suit up for the Fuel Masters, who are currently toting a 3-2 record.

“We told Calvin to keep on playing, keep being positive. It’s really hard for him because he wants to play and he wants to contribute but the best thing that he could do is cheer for us,” said Robinson.

“I love Calvin, everybody loves Calvin and we’re doing it for Calvin.” – Martin Mendoza/Rappler.com
