Nonoy Chuatico is best remembered for his on-court heroics with Ateneo

Emilio ‘Nonoy’ Chuatico Jr, who helped Ateneo win its first UAAP basketball championship, passed away on Friday, January 1 in Atlanta, Georgia due to a lingering illness, his brother confirmed Saturday. He was 55.

PK Chuatico told Rappler that his brother, who suited up for Ginebra in the pros, had been staying in Atlanta since December 2019 to see his doctor and “competed in great terms versus the disease.”

Chuatico served as captain for the victorious Philippine team in the 1991 Southeast Asian Games and suited up for Ginebra and Purefoods in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) from 1992 to 1995.

In 1998, he also saw action for the Manila Metrostars in the inaugural season of the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA).

“He was a team player. He is very intense, especially in defense. He really puts pride in his defense,” Bong Ravena, Chuatico’s teammate in the 1991 SEA Games squad and in Purefoods, said in a message to Rappler.

The 6-foot shooter, though, remains best remembered for his heroics in the 1987 UAAP title clash between Ateneo and University of the East, where he played a key role in one of the greatest rallies in collegiate ball.

Chuatico was inducted into the Ateneo Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.

He is survived by his mother Milagros, siblings Chao, Paul, and Bibo, and daughters Dani, Quita, and Yena. – Rappler.com
