Barangay Ginebra staved off a late scare by the Blackwater Bossing and cruised to a 96-81 breakthrough win in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig on Friday, July 23.
Ginebra has now entered the win column with a 1-1 slate at the expense of a winless Blackwater side that lost its third straight game.
Stanley Pringle led the balanced attack with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists on 8-of-15 shooting, while newcomer Christian Standhardinger chipped in a big 11-point, 19-board double-double.
Not to be outdone, Prince Caperal also turned heads from the bench with a big 16-point, 11-board double-double of his own as he scored 8 of Ginebra’s 21 first-quarter points.
Despite the Gin Kings’ early hot start, Blackwater hung around for the entire game and got as close as two points, 77-79, midway through the final frame off a Baser Amer layup.
But that would turn out to be the last drop of offensive juice the Bossing had as Ginebra yanked away the game with a game-sealing 17-4 run for the final score.
As expected, decorated head coach Tim Cone was not the least bit satisfied with how his loaded team struggled late against the bottom-dwelling Blackwater.
“It wasn't pretty, that's for sure. We haven't put together any pretty basketball yet. We're still working to be more coherent and more together in our play right now. It's been a little bit of a struggle,” he said.
“We got Christian late in the preparation phase, so we never really had a chance to really get him integrated solely into what we do, so he's oftentimes guessing out there, and when you guess, you have a tendency to be a little tentative in your play,” he continued.
Mike Tolomia led the losing effort with 22 points off the bench on 8-of-12 shooting and a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown, while Simon Enciso added 16 markers, albeit on a subpar 6-of-21 clip.
