Lee powers Magnolia past Ginebra to stay undefeated in PH Cup

The Magnolia Hotshots extended their winning streak to three games after crushing Barangay Ginebra, 89-79, in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig on Sunday, July 25.

Paul Lee led the way for Magnolia with 23 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists as the Hotshots remained unbeaten in three outings and joined the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters at the top of the standings.

“It starts with our defense. We have a goal and we achieved that goal on defense,” said Magnolia Hotshots coach Chito Victolero.

“Credit to the players, they gave their best effort,” he added.

After leading by only 4 points, 46-42, at the half, the Hotshots went on a massive 19-7 run early in the third period to lead by as many as 16 points, 65-49.

The Gin Kings managed to trim the deficit to a single possession, 79-77, with less than four minutes remaining, but the Hotshots went on another huge 10-4 run late in the game to pull away for good.

Ian Sangalang, who sank the game-winning shot for Magnolia in their previous outing, had 17 points, while newly acquired forward Calvin Abueva added 15 points and 9 rebounds for the Hotshots in his first Manila Clasico.

Stanley Pringle finished with 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, while LA Tenorio, Christian Standhardinger, and Scottie Thompson chipped in 13 points apiece for the Gin Kings, who dropped to 1-2 in the standings.
