The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters halted their two-game losing skid after escaping the Magnolia Hotshots, 75-72, in the PBA Philippine Cup at the DHVSU Gym in Bacolor, Pampanga on Friday, September 10.
Javee Mocon led the way with 19 points and 8 rebounds as the Elasto Painters returned to their winning ways and improved to 5-4 in the standings.
Leading by only 3 points, 31-28, at halftime, Mocon took charge early in the third period and scored 10 straight points to put Rain or Shine’s lead up to 7, 43-36.
The Hotshots, however, went on a huge 17-8 run at the end of the quarter to steal the lead from the Elasto Painters heading into the final frame, 53-51.
It was a tightly contested battle between both squads all throughout the fourth period, but it was the Elasto Painters that pulled away as rookie Jerrick Ahanmisi failed to convert on a potential game-tying three-pointer in the final possession of the ball game.
Two-time league MVP James Yap turned back the hands of time as he added 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting for the Elasto Painters, while rookie Leonard Santillan also contributed 14 markers.
Ian Sangalang finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Calvin Abueva put up 12 points and 13 boards for the Hotshots, who dropped to 6-3 and fell short of their bid to become the first team to secure a quarterfinals berth.
