After a quiet comeback, six-time MVP June Mar Fajardo rebounds with a double-double to power the San Miguel Beermen to their first win

The San Miguel Beermen gave a preview of their almighty power in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup after wrecking the NLEX Road Warriors, 110-93, at the Ynares Sports Arena on Friday, July 23.

With the win, the former five-time defending All-Filipino champions broke through at 1-1, while the Road Warriors slipped to a 1-2 record.

Two-time scoring champion CJ Perez was the first man off the loaded Beermen bench, and led the balanced attack with 21 points in 29 minutes.

Star big man Mo Tautuaa also came off the pine for a 16-point, 9-rebound outing in just 22 minutes while six-time MVP June Mar Fajardo started and churned out a 14-point, 10-board double-double in just under 25 minutes on the floor.

After a strong 32-22 opening quarter capped by a Paul Zamar buzzer-beater, the Beermen then completely seized control of the game in the second frame off three-straight Perez triples, with the last one giving them a 22-point lead, 56-34, at the 3:17 mark.

It was all San Miguel from that point onwards as they peaked with a 24-point gap, 108-84, off a Marcio Lassiter triple at the three-minute mark of the payoff period. The veteran sniper finished with 17 points.

Beermen head coach Leo Austria simply couldn’t ask for more from the national team-level prowess his players displayed this game.

“I’m so thankful for the players and the way they played tonight. From start to finish, they played defense and focused on the game,” he said.

“I think they realized the importance of this game. This is a very short tournament with 11 games, so we cannot afford to lose two games in a row.”

Kevin Alas led the tough loss with 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists while fellow star gunner Kiefer Ravena came off the bench for 16 markers and 7 dimes.
