Ginebra, San Miguel, GlobalPort, Barako Bull complete 4-team trade

MANILA, Philippines - Four PBA franchises completed a trade deal on Monday, April 6, that will see six big men switch teams for the next conference.

According to the PBA’s official website, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel has traded veteran big Billy Mamaril to Barako Bull in exchange for third-year slotman Dave Marcelo, who played for the San Beda Red Lions in the NCAA under Ginebra’s new head coach Frankie Lim.

Barako Bull then dealt Mamaril to the Beermen in exchange for back-up big Rico Maierhofer, but the former was shipped again right away to GlobalPort along with veteran big Doug Kramer in exchange for Yancy de Ocampo and Gabby Espinas.

Here’s the official transaction, per the PBA:

Barako – Ginebra – San Miguel – GlobalPort Trade

Barako Bull – Barangay Ginebra Trade

Barako Bull – San Miguel Beermen Trade

GlobalPort – San Miguel Beermen Trade

The addition of Marcelo, a starter-quality player in the PBA, gives Lim a suitable back-up for Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar. Bringing in the big man could also mean that the Gin Kings will be using an offensive system that relies more on their bigs as opposed to their patented “run-and-gun” attack.

Mamaril and Kramer give GlobalPort a veteran presence that could help guide the team’s younger stars in Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle. San Miguel, on the other hand, acquires a two-way backup in Espinas who can more than make up for the minutes that will be given to June Mar Fajardo for rest.
