Wright dedicates 36-point explosion to ‘hero’ Kobe
‘I know it’s been a long time, it’s been over 8 months, but not a day goes by when I don’t think about him,’ Phoenix star Matthew Wright says of the late Kobe Bryant

On the day the Los Angeles Lakers bagged the NBA championship, Matthew Wright also had the franchise’s late legend in mind.

Wright channeled his inner Mamba Mentality as he exploded for 36 points to fuel Phoenix past Meralco on the second day of the PBA Philippine Cup restart at the Angeles University Foundation in Pampanga on Monday, October 12.

“Honestly, this is the first game that I’ve played professionally since Kobe Bryant passed away. I know it’s been a long time, it’s been over 8 months, but not a day goes by when I don’t think about him,” said Wright following their 116-98 victory.

“That was my hero, my childhood hero, so I just knew that when it was time to come on the court, I was gonna dedicate that performance to Kobe.”

The sharpshooting guard dropped 14 of his 36 points in the 3rd period to help Phoenix put the lead up by as many as 29 points, 92-63, heading into the final frame.

Wright also had 6 assists, 4 rebounds and finished the game shooting 11-of-23 from the field, along with 4-of-9 shooting from downtown.

“I’m gonna wear his shoes for the entire conference and just try to channel my inner Mamba,” added Wright, who wore the Nike Kobe 5 Protro “Big Stage” in his PBA bubble debut.
