Chris Newsome hits the game-winner as Meralco zeroes in on ending its playoff drought in the PBA Philippine Cup

Chris Newsome came through in crunch time for Meralco with the game-winner in a 95-93 victory over Terrafirma in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation in Pampanga on Sunday, November 8.

Newsome hit a fadeaway jumper over CJ Perez from the right baseline at the buzzer to finish with 12 points as the Bolts zeroed in on a playoff berth that had eluded them over the last 4 editions of the All-Filipino conference.

Blocked by Perez in the previous play, Newsome – who also had 5 rebounds and 3 steals – redeemed himself when it mattered most, with the Dyip failing to complete their comeback from down 20 points.

Already out of quarterfinals contention, Terrafirma sought to play spoiler in the playoff race as it knotted the score at 93-93 with a minute left off back-to-back three-pointers from CJ Perez and Juami Tiongson.

Perez blocking Newsome in the ensuing play opened the door for the Dyip to clinch their second straight win, but Tiongson muffed the potential go-ahead jumper as the Bolts escaped to improve to 6-4.

Raymond Almazan led Meralco with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks, while Bong Quinto had 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Aaron Black and Allein Maliksi each had 11 points for the Bolts and Bryan Faundo stepped up in the absence of Reynel Hugnatan with 10 points, all coming in the first half.

Hugnatan, one of the Bolts’ leading scorer, sat out due to a groin injury.

Perez led Terrafirma, which remained at 12th and last place with a 1-8 record, with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks.

Meanwhile, Tiongson fired 21 points in yet another loss.
