Rookie Renzo Subido came up big late in the game for NorthPort as the Batang Pier snapped their four-game losing skid with a 107-96 victory over the Terrafirma Dyip in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation in Pampanga on Saturday, October 24.
“Yung mga bata, gusto lang talaga manalo eh. Ayaw na nila mag 0-5,” said NorthPort coach Pido Jarencio.
(The kids really wanted to win. They don’t want to go 0-5.)
Subido, the 24th pick in the 2019 PBA Draft, poured in all of his 12 points in the last 5 minutes of the ball game to help the Batang Pier secure their first victory in 5 outings.
“He showed maturity in his game,” said Jarencio of Subido.
After being down for most of the game, Terrafirma momentarily took hold of the lead midway through the 3rd period, 64-60, after an Aldrech Ramos three-pointer.
The Batang Pier, however, regained their momentum in the final frame as Subido and the rest of his squad caught fire late and extended their lead to as many as 14, 94-80, off a booming Subido three-pointer with 1:40 left in the game.
Christian Standhardinger, who had a rough performance in their last outing, led NorthPort with 23 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists.
Kelly Nabong contributed 18 points and 8 rebounds, Garvo Lanete had 14 points, while Subido and Paolo Taha added 12 points apiece for the Batang Pier, who played without Sean Anthony due to a suspected hamstring injury.
CJ Perez once again led the Dyip with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists while top rookie Roosevelt Adams finally showed his wares and dropped a career-best 19 points, to go along with 8 rebounds as Terrafirma fell to 0-4.
