MANILA, Philippines - The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters dominated the Blackwater Elite from start to finish and came away with a 123-85 win to snap their two-game losing streak and win for just the second time in 6 games in the Governors’ Cup on Wednesday, June 3, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Import Wendell McKinnes and reserve big man Jervy Cruz led the scoring for the winning side, putting up 15 points each. Paul Lee scored 13 points, while Jeff Chan and TY Tang registered 12 and 11 points, respectively.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve been in a situation like this,” said Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guiao, whose team was on the receiving end of bad beatings in previous games before facing Blackwater.
“We’re just struggling. We’re just living day to day, game to game. A win like this gives our confidence a boost. We’re still not giving up on this conference.”
“We’re just trying to survive,” Guiao later added, “avoid elimination, and perhaps when we’re in the playoffs we can get our bearings back.”
Rain or Shine jumped to a 30-22 lead after the first quarter and opened the second period on a 6-0 run that put them in control of the contest. At the half, their lead had already evaporated to 26, and all that was left remaining from the game was the final score.
The Elasto Painters shot 47% from the floor and 42% from downtown as they registered their third most lopsided win in franchise history and handed the Elite their worst ever defeat in team history. The 38-point disparity was also the most ever for a PBA game at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“A win like this is very important especially for our ego and for our confidence,” said Guiao.
Blackwater, who fell to 1-6, was led by import Marcus Douthit’s 14 points. Raphy Reyes put up 13 points and 4 assists off the bench. The Elite shot just 42% from the field and committed 21 turnovers that led to 20 Rain or Shine points.
The Elasto Painters will be back in action on Saturday, June 6, when they go head to head with the Talk ’N Text Tropang Texters in a Commissioner’s Cup finals rematch. Every win from here on is critical for Rain or Shine if they hope to be one of the 8 teams to make the playoffs.
“The last 8 or 9 conference we’ve been making it to the playoffs, but there’s a danger we might not make it this conference,” said Guiao, whose Elasto Painters have made the PBA Finals in 5 of the last 9 conferences.
“So this is unfamiliar ground, but sometimes something like this needs to happen to wake you up. It’s also good for us that we had a complete line-up for the first time tonight.”
